Stamping plates and nail polish, indie style.

Vivid Lacquer

This week is going to be incredible, I think. ;)

  • Stamping plate preorders will ship sometime in September. I don’t have a hard date set for when they will come in, but they will ship as quickly as possible. The plates will be ordered from my manufacturer this week.
  • A $1.50 shipping surcharge per plate will be added to your order regardless of what other items you are ordering. If you want to order multiples of each plate, email me before purchasing them off of Etsy at

Friday, August 17 - 4pm PST / 7pm EST: New colors! This will include limited quantities of Assemble!, Composition, Fairy Bread, Have Fun Storming the Castle, Hivemind, Notebook Paper, and Sketchbook.

  • No minis of these colors will be available just yet. More details on that when I have a true ETA on my mini bottle order (I’m currently out).

How gorgeous is Harlequin over CG Stone Cold?!

Welcome to my first ever swatch and review! Vivid Lacquer recently posted for any bloggers interested in doing a review for her to send her a message. Since I’m a smaller blog (and most will only send stuff for review if you have a large amount of followers)  I jumped at the chance to do something so awesome as this!

Already you can colored me impressed. When I received my nail mail I only expected two minis but to my surprise there was three waiting for me to try! I received Cookies and Cream, Your Princess Is In Another Castle, and today’s mani’s polish The Harlequin’s Adoration.

To start off I’ll give you Vivid’s description of Harlequin: This polish is a dazzling red and bronze fleck polish, rounded out by black and white diamond, red heart, and fine black and white glitter. Dazzling is correct! I wasn’t so sure I was going to like this polish, it definitely not something I would normally buy with my own money. But OMG I LOVE this polish!!!! lol I couldn’t stop staring at the hearts while at work! It’s so pretty in the sunlight as well.

The polish itself is sheer, so it’s definitely a layering polish. I have mine layered over Sone Cold by China Glaze topped with Sache Vite. Wear for work was good as well for me. Specially since Stone Cold has god awful wear time. I did nee to add another layer of TC after work tonight because one of my hearts on my index was starting to lift. But I contribute that to the fact that my SV is super gooey and near the end of the bottle and I can’t get a proper layer worth a poop!

I enjoyed the consistency of the polish but do wish is just a teeny tiny bit thicker, just so I can get more diamonds and hearts without them sinking. I had a decent amount of finer glitters and flecks. I also enjoyed the fact that I could shake my minis. I have a few other indie minis and I can’t seem to get them to shake and mix up when I wanna use them. So that’s a definite plus for me! I just recommend tipping your bottle upside down while prepping your nails so all the good pieces make it on your brush when applying =] Also it applied really well to my nail, no problems there!

You can find swatches of Harlequin by itself and how it builds up over at Tarts N’ Talons, along with other Vivid Lacquer swatches.

The Harlequin’s Adoration is 9$ for a 15ml full bottle and $4.50 for a 5ml mini.

You can check out Vivid Lacquer on Etsy where she sells all her polishes and stamping plates. She also has a Tumblr and a Facebook page that you can check out as well.

Overall this polish rocks and I’m super glad I picked it! I almost sent her an email to change this polish out for another one. Man am I glad I didn’t! Stay tuned for two more swatches and reviews. I’ll be doing them in between some of my challenge days when I don’t have enough time do go all out. I’m entering the inspiration days and that requires more time and planning! Thanks for looking =]

*This polish was sent to me for review. All opinions and expressions are my own.

Some fun news, and also some non-Vivid Lacquer manicures, because why not?

The fun stuff: My next line of polishes are going to generally consist of topcoats rather than jellies and tinted glitter bombs like I have been doing. I am VERY excited about the next set, and I hope to have some teaser pictures for you soon. These are due out next month, pending some more development time.

In other news: I am still working on the stamping plate pictures for you guys. Things have been a bit busy around here.

Blogger packages have started going out, and will be all out by Friday. Shipping times in general are still under 4 business days.

Finally: I hope you enjoy the above manicures. One was done for the Batman premiere, and the other is my attempt at restarting the 30 Day Challenge. :) And excuse my cuticles, would you? Polish making is a bit harsh on the skin. ♥

Q: Just wondering when you'll have Don't Forget the Rum up for sale? I'm in love!

I should be restocking Don’t Forget the Rum, The Harlequin’s Lament, and Hurricane Weather sometime next week. I’ll post more about it on my Facebook/Twitter when I have a more hard date. :)

This polish is a combination of a few things: my love for buttercream frosting on birthday cake, my friends’ obsession with (and participation in a contest involving) My Little Ponies: Friendship Is Magic, and a challenge to create a polish inspired by the rainbow. It’s today’s update exclusive, and will only be available using this exact formula until supplies are gone.

I hope you all enjoy this shop update as much as I enjoyed preparing for it. The update should be live somewhere around 1 PM PST on my Etsy shop.

Later on today, I should have some news regarding a limited edition polish that will be featured in a giveaway, so check in for that!

This next update was scheduled to celebrate my birthday - July 13th. It seemed like a great time to release another six polishes into my main line, including one specfically made with my birthday in mind: Don’t Forget The Rum.

A friend helped come up with the name, recommending ’Don’t Forget the Booze’ when I mentioned I was struggling with naming this polish. I’m a rum fiend, though - dark rum with a bit of Dr. Pepper is one of my favorite drinks, and so I had to tweak the suggestion a bit.

Who doesn’t like jelly sandwiches? For my birthday, I wanted a ready made jelly sandwich - a super translucent base, filled with just enough glitter and pigment to provide amazing depth following the application of several coats. I feel like I reached that goal here by combining black, white, and pink glitter in several shapes.

The jelly base is so shiny and squishie in appearance that Maiya’s camera couldn’t pick it up accurately. We solved that problem after a bit of collaboration by using a matte topcoat.

Views on Quality Control

There have been some quality control issues and concerns lately revolving around indie polish makers, so I want to clear the air on some of my materials and production processes:

  • I only use stainless steel BB’s for mixing in all of my polishes. I have never used zinc, as there are concerns about discoloration from the way that zinc reacts with nail polish base.
  • All of my glitters are tested for color fastness and solvent resistance prior to being used in polishes for sale.
  • I only use suspension base for my products to ensure that as little glitter as possible sinks and settles in my nail polish.
  • My polish mixing process is done in large batches in narrow capped bottles or in individual polish bottles. This minimizes the amount of air that gets into the polish, keeping it from getting stringy or drying out prior to being bottled.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask. :)

So, I’m toying with an idea.

My favorite part of having my own polish line is experimentation. Unfortunately, it’s not feasible to constantly add new polishes to my permanent line, so at some point I felt that I had to cut out the ‘play’ aspect of my business in order to focus on producing large quantities of the colors that are in demand. I think I’ve found a compromise.

My next few updates will contain ‘Update Exclusive’ colors that are limited availability, depending on expected shop traffic for each update. This will allow me to make small batches of polishes that I love, but which may not be what I have in mind for permanent colors. These colors will only be available one time in my shop, although they may appear again later in slightly different incarnations.

Tomorrow, 7/2, the Update Exclusive color will be Chocolate Covered Cherry. Multi-sized red glitter and black bar glitter swims in a rich red, jelly base that sparkles with hidden shimmer.

One of my dearest friends says to me, ‘Anni, I have an idea for a polish.’ She tells me about flowers, about female family members whose names bloomed like a garden in her family tree.

And so I listen as she tells me about Daisy, her great grandmother, who was born on June 13, 1913 in a covered wagon. She kept her independent streak throughout her life, and gave it as a gift to her descendants. This month would have been her 99th birthday.

Happy belated birthday, Daisy. I hope I did you and your memory proud.
